Karl Barry Sharpless is an American chemist who has twice been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, receiving half the prize in 2001 for chirally catalysed oxidation reactions and sharing the 2022 prize for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry. Throughout his academic career, he held professorships at MIT and Stanford University before leading a laboratory at Scripps Research. His chemical breakthroughs, including asymmetric synthesis reactions and azide-alkyne cycloadditions, are foundational across modern organic chemistry and pharmaceutical synthesis.
Winning two Nobel Prizes in Chemistry (2001 and 2022) for chirally catalysed oxidation reactions and click chemistry.
