The National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) was incorporated in 1992 on the recommendations of the Pherwani committee to bring transparency to Indian equity markets, commencing operations in 1994. Headquartered in Mumbai, NSE introduced electronic trading to India and grew to become the world's largest derivatives exchange by contract volume as well as the 5th largest exchange globally by market capitalization. It is owned by a consortium of public sector financial institutions, including the Life Insurance Corporation of India and State Bank of India, along with global private equity investors.
