Originally established as LG Chem's battery business division after research began in 1992, LG Chem produced South Korea's first lithium-ion battery in 1999. In December 2020, LG Chem officially spun off the division into LG Energy Solution, which subsequently completed South Korea's largest initial public offering upon debuting on the Korea Exchange in January 2022. The company manufactures electric vehicle batteries for global automakers including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Audi, Renault, Volvo, and SAIC Motor.
