Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) was an Indian chemical company founded in 1934, operating as a 50.9% subsidiary of the US-based Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation alongside Indian public shareholders. UCIL manufactured batteries, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and plastics, ranking as the 21st largest company in India with revenues of ₹2 billion ($170 million) in 1984. In December 1984, its pesticide manufacturing facility in Bhopal suffered a massive methyl isocyanate gas leak that killed thousands and injured hundreds of thousands. UCC sold its controlling stake in 1994 to McLeod Russel India Limited, after which the business was renamed Eveready Industries India Limited.
