Martin Eberhard is an American engineer and entrepreneur best known as the co-founder and original CEO of Tesla, Inc. (originally Tesla Motors), which he established alongside Marc Tarpenning in 2003. Prior to founding Tesla, he co-founded Network Computing Devices and NuvoMedia, creator of the Rocket eBook, which was acquired by Gemstar–TV Guide International in 2000 for $187 million. As Tesla's inaugural Chief Executive, Eberhard led the early design and development of the Tesla Roadster, pioneering the commercial use of lithium-ion battery packs in performance electric automobiles. Following his departure from Tesla in late 2007, he served as Director of EV Development at Volkswagen Group and Chief Strategy Officer at SF Motors.
