Andrew James Viterbi is an American electrical engineer and entrepreneur best known for inventing the Viterbi algorithm in 1967 and co-founding Qualcomm Inc. in 1985. His ground-breaking work on error-correcting codes and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) standard development laid the technical foundation for modern mobile communications. He is currently the Presidential Chair Professor at the University of Southern California and heads the venture capital firm The Viterbi Group.
