Anatoly Aleksandrovich Sobchak was a Russian politician, legal scholar, and the first democratically elected mayor of Saint Petersburg, serving from 1991 to 1996. He chaired the Constitutional Assembly that prepared the 1993 Constitution of the Russian Federation and held key positions in the Soviet and Russian legislatures. During his academic career at Leningrad State University, he mentored Vladimir Putin, who later served as his deputy mayor.
